Suicide Prevention Month: Your Life Matters

Updated: Sep 17

Sept.15, 2024

Here at Shangri'La, September is special to for several reasons. It's the start of one of my favorite times of year.....Autumn! It's also the birthday month of two of my favorite people in the world....my son (9/20) and my mom (9/23). Last but not least, September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month. Losing two very close friends to suicide inspired me to become an advocate for mental wellness & suicide prevention and taught me the importance of checking up on our loved ones and noticing the signs of a potential mental health crisis.

I learned the hard way that signs aren't always obvious, but there are things we can look out for: withdrawing from family/friends, sudden traumatic events such as divorce, job loss, financial issues or death of a loved one, sudden mood changes, increased use of alcohol/drugs or other "risky" behavior & talks of suicide or feeling like a failure/burden. If you notice any of these signs or if anything looks/feels "off", please don't ignore it. Here are some thingss you can do to help:

  • Start a conversation and don't be afraid to ask them directly if they're having thoughts of suicide. It can be difficult and uncomfortable, but it could actually be the lifeline they need and could help save a life.

  • Listen without judgement. Let them talk about what they're going through without interrupting, judging, offering quick fixes.

  • Encourage professional help. Suggest they reach out to a therapist, counselor or suicide prevention specialist. Offer to help them find resources or even accompany them if possible

  • Stay connected. Follow up with them regularly. Your continued support can make a big difference.

  • Know your limits. Understand that you're not expected to be a therapist. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911or a mental health professional. Last but not least, never put yourself in danger and make your mental health a priority.

Remember, if you or anyone you know is experiencing a mental crisis, help is available 24/7 with the Suicide & Crisis Hotline by calling or texting 988
